The Municipality of Chelopech is located in the southern slopes of Balkan Mountains with total area of 44 390 decares. It consists of one populated area – the village of Chelopech with population of 1754 people. The main road from Sofia to Burgas crosses the centre of the village. The village of Chelopech is in the neighbourhood of the Municipalities of Zlatitsa, Chavdar, Mirkovo and Entropole.
The percent of unemployment for the Municipality is relatively low – 7.9% of the active population, and the biggest part of unemployed people is with elementary and lower education.
The village of Chelopech is one of the biggest copper-gold deposits in Europe. Deposit Chelopech is located to the west of village of Chelopech, over the southern slope of the Balkan Mountains in the Zlatitsa valley(Zlatishka kotlovina) and is about 700 meters over the sea level. The geological researches in the area date from 1840. Exploiting of the deposit started in the end of 50’s of XX century. At present, copper-gold ores are extracted from Dundee Precious Metals Chelopech EAD, a subsidiary of Dundee Precious Metals Inc.
